I wanted to construct a reproduction of a highboy based on several outstanding Connecticut examples, c. 1740-1780 because of the timeless beauty of this classic piece that has been enjoyed for 250 years.
This is a highboy with a broken-scroll pediment made of cherry and poplar hand finished with tung oil and varnish.
This project is the culmination of over twenty years of woodworking experience beginning at the "old" Boston Evening Trade School adult-ed class. I machined this piece at Blue Hills Regional Vocational cabinet shop. The classes met two nights a week for 4 hours each class. It took two years. I assembled the piece at my two-bedroom apartment, finishing it on the apartment balcony. It was built as two projects; a lowboy and the upper case. As I built the lowboy and as finances would allow I would buy the rough sawn cherry and poplar boards for the upper case and store them in my van, which I used for commuting to and from work.
It is now proudly displayed in my home and will be passed down to future generations to enjoy long after I’m gone.
