I had a pipe break within a wall just above the circuit box in my basement. At that time, 2nd and 3rd floor items were being stored in the basement to have new hardwood installed in those areas, so the basement was full. The break resulted in a stream of water like a fire hose shooting 15 feet outward, showering and flooding everything in the room, water rushed down the hall, into all closets, bathroom, mechanical room, and under the wall and into my garage. It also came out of the circuits within the box and went into the ceiling and was coming out of the lights. Carpet was under 2 inches of water, as was every room down that hallway. Insurance wouldn’t cover carpet replacement and offered an extremely small amount for such a big job - therein my project began. With the money I received, plus many thousands more, I began the project myself. I already had a lot of tools, but I bought a table saw, a compound miter saw, a brad nailer, a hammer drill, a wet tile saw, many cabinets, laminate flooring, backer board, tile and a long list of tools – all from Home Depot. After repairing damage to the lower part of walls, I removed the carpet and replaced it with laminate, installed cabinets wall to wall on either side of fireplace, re-faced the painted brick fireplace with backer board and new tile, tore the ceiling down, opened up the area under the staircase to the next floor and installed cabinets there, installed cabinets in a large closet, installed a new cabinet, sink, mirror and lights in the bathroom, and bought and installed butcher block countertops for all areas. I finished the butcher block with polyurethane (3 coats) and sanded in between coats. Although I removed the previous wet ceiling, I hired someone to install a new ceiling and prep for me to paint. I bought Home Depot LED lighting and hired an electrician to install them on a dimmer switch. I finished the job after installing crown molding (difficult) with just a small amount of help around tight corners. That’s when you find out just how crooked walls and ceiling can be. I installed 5 inch baseboard and quarter round. I also replaced all door hardware to oil rubbed bronze throughout the house – all from Home Depot. This was, for me, a difficult job that has taken over a year, working on it many days each week. I’ve come to know many employees at Home Depot, and as they have come to know me and what I have done, they are all shocked that I am a 62 year old single woman and I did this with little assistance. I am very proud of the end product and all of the new skills I have learned. The main room is now just waiting for some additional furniture and a television!
