I was looking for an ornament for the side of my new shed that I built last year. I considered a 5 point barn star or American flag made from wood slats. When I saw an image of a compass rose, it had an immediate impact. I thought it would be a challenge for my entry-level wood skills and remind me of my love of sailing while working in the garden.
I created several sketches before starting my project. The compass rose is made from 1/2" plywood primed and painted to match the shed. The circular base plate is 24" in diameter with 18" arrows pointing in the cardinal directions. The smaller arrows point to the "ordinary" directions at a 45-degree angle. I used a countersink bit and zinc flat head screws to mount the arrows to the baseplate and side of the shed.
