Learn how to make your own geometric and floral wood mosaic wall art in this simple tutorial. It's a great beginner's woodworking project. The mosaic wall art we did here has a mix of southwestern and boho feel to it.
Let's get started!
1. Cut your 5/8" plywood backer board to your desired size on your table saw. Mine is 11 x 6.5 inches.
2. Cut all your little wood mosaic pieces out of cedar lath with our miter saw. All angles are 45 degrees. (lath are the thin strips lattice is made of.)
3. Either paint or mod podge paper onto your plywood backer board.
4. Paint all your little mosaic pieces.
5. Glue and nail your geometric mosaic pieces onto the backer board. I use a pin-nailer (23 ga.) or brad-nailer (18 ga.)
6. For the wood frame, I use cedar fence boards that I've ripped to size on the table saw. Mine are 1/2" x 1-1/2" strips.
7. Cut your wood frame pieces to length. I did mitered corners, but if you're new to framing, just do a simpler frame with only straight cuts. When framing up a piece, I usually hold the wood frame up to the edge of the backer board and mark the cut. You could measure the backer board and transfer it to the frame piece, too. I find it's more accurate to just hold side by side and mark your cut line that way.
8. Use wood glue and a nail gun to put the wood frame on around the backer board. You'll be nailing it to the sides of the plywood edge.
9. Add some picture hanging hardware if necessary.
10. I like clear-coating my geometric wood mosaics with a Minwax Polycrylic in Satin finish.
